Virgen del Carmen

As other towns in Spain, Tenerife includes plenty of religious festivals that are celebrated during the entire year. For example, there is a popular one called the Virgen Del Carmen festivity. This important catholic celebration takes place in Puerto de la Cruz on July 12th of each year. The Virgen del Carmen is quite respected by the citizens of Tenerife because of its protection in favor of the sailors and fishermen.

Virgen del Carmen - Tenerife Each year, the Virgen Del Carmen statue is transported by four people around the principal beaches, seaports, bays and towns of the city during a complete day. That is why that the quiet and silence town of Puerto de la Cruz is absolutely transformed into a joyful and noisy city due to the thousands of tourists and local people that gather together in the city to enjoy the magnificent celebration.

People from different parts of Spain, Tenerife and the world visit Puerto de la Cruz to worship the virgin. The virgin is also known as a “Queen of the Seas”. Before people celebrate in the different seaports and bays of the city, there is a vital and crucial ceremony in the principal parish of the town called Nuestra Señora de la Peña de Francia.

Spain festivals Once the priest has prayed and blessed the statue of the Virgen del Carmen, the celebration starts when the sacred statue is taken out and embarks on a big boat with the purpose of visiting the main bays and seaports.

During the celebration, visitors can enjoy a variety of artistic performances that include splendid local bands, musician’s dancers and singers. However, travelers are going to find many bands that play traditional folk music from the island. In addition, tourists can try several delicious dishes and beverages.
