Virgen de la Candelaria

Likewise the carnival in Tenerife, the Virgin of Candelaria (Virgen de la Candelaria) festivity is another important and popular celebration in the island. It was also declared as National Tourist interest. The Virgin of Candelaria is celebrated on 14th/15th of each August and takes places in a town with the same name. In fact, the Candelaria town is, by far, the most exciting place to celebrate this festival. The Virgin of Candelaria is not only the protector virgin in the city of Candelaria city but it is also the Saint Patron of the Canary Islands.

Virgen de la Candelaria - Tenerife Catholics from different parts of the island and Spain gather together in the city to praise the virgin. This festivity is prepared with many months of anticipation and it includes massive processions, dance performances, floral art offerings and concerts with traditional music. The Virgin of Candelaria is also known in Spanish as Nuestra Señora de la Candelaria or La Morenita.

But in some celebrations she was represented as a Black Madonna. The temple of the Virgin of Candelaria has a fine architectonic style and holds priceless items. The name of the temple is Royal Basilica Shrine of our lady of Marian Candelaria. There are several legends about this virgin in Tenerife. However, the most popular one is described by the historian and priest of the sixteenth century Alonso Espinoza.

Candelaria Tenerife In 1594, he wrote that two native inhabitants (Guanche people) discovered in the early 1392 a statue of the Virgin Mary with a child in one hand and a green candle in the other hand. They found the statue in the shoreline of Chimisay Beach. The statue was transported toward the Mencey of Guimar (Chinguaro’s Cave) and later it was moved to Achbinico’s Cave (Cave of San Blas.) The statue of the Virgin of Candelaria was venerated and worshipped by the Guanche people for centuries.

Plenty of people tried to destroy the image but they couldn’t break anything because the statue was blessed. There is a small museum in the interior of the convent of los Dominicos that is located next to the basilica of the Virgin of Candelaria. Visitors can find further information about the details of this important virgin in the island. In 1830, Fernando Estevez made a replica of the statue.

The city of Candelaria is a touristic area. However, there are not good beaches. There are plenty of good restaurants, shops, bars and hotels though. In addition, visitors can find several handicraft stores that sell catholic religion objects.
