The Jardin Botanico, Botanical Garden, or simply the Botanical in Tenerife, has been around since King Charles III founded it during the Age of Enlightenment, more than two centuries ago.It is officially known as the “Jardin de Aclimatización de La Orotava,” but ever since Puerto de la Cruz separated from La Orotavaas a municipality, this name has been cause of slight confusion regarding its true location.
The truth is that this park is located in the district of La Paz (in Puerto de la Cruz), taking the Marquez Av, and making a turn on Retama St.(next to the stop called Jardin Botanico), will get you there in no time whatsoever.
This is the second oldest in its kindin Spain and thus the second botanical garden founded in this country. Despite King Charles III, announced its foundation on August 17, 1788 a few months before his death, it was his successor King Charles IV, whom supported the project and continued it.
Its original purpose was to count with a place where it were possible to grow the existing plants of great interest in the Spanish colonies of the Philippines and America, securing its acclimatization to cold conditions in a way it would later allow its transfer to Madrid and the Real Gardens of Aranjuez.
Many gardens were designed throughout all Spain with this purpose, the one in Tenerife was the second one founded. The earthquake of 1798 largely affected its start, but despite this, the Botanical was the only successful garden that accomplished its acclimatization purpose on the Spain of this era, acclimatizing tropical plants to the local climate.
However, many plants didn’t survive the Spanish winter and consequently ended up being left in Tenerife. There are more than 200 different species from all over the world on plants and trees. The most popular attractions among tourists are:
- The sausage
- The drunken trees
- The 200-year-old fig tree (said to swallow accidentally locked-in tourists)
- The small lily pond with turtles
- The fountain
This is one of the most imaginative gardens in Tenerife; there are all sorts of rare plants to discover, make sure not to miss it while in the north of this island.
