Iglesia de San Francisco

The Iglesia de San Francisco (Church of Saint Francisco) is the main Church and the most important religious building in Tenerife; it’s situated at the Plaza del Principe in Santa Cruz Tenerife and hosts some of the most valuables religious art works such as: El Señor de las Tribulaciones or commonly known as El Señor de la Santa Cruz.

San Francisco - Tenerife The church was built under Baroque style and finished in 1680, it has 3 chapels (or naves): The Major, the Virgin del Retiro and The Señor de las Tribulaciones built in XVIII century considered one of the Best in the Canarias Islands; from which almost all the artworks disappeared, but visitors can still contemplate the central altarpiece, a masterwork of the Andalusian school.

Other important images are: Santa Rita de Casia, San Antonio de Padua and the Cristo de la Buena Muerte, amongothers. And the altar pieces of thechurch are: The Retablo de San Jose, Virgen de la Consolacion, San Buenaventura, San Antonio, and of la Porciuncula.

You’ll find adjacent to the church a museum with European art from 17th to 19th centuries that you can visit also. In its origins the building was dedicated to a convent El Convento Franciscano de San Pedro de Alcántara; inside you’ll see three columns made of stone that host images of the Virgen Milagrosa, San Francisco and Santo Domingo. If you want to visit it, you have to come on worship hours.
