History of Tenerife

Tenerife is undoubtedly one of the most beautiful and amazing Spanish regions. Mountains, beaches, astounding cliffs, and a large variety of plants and exotic animals accompanying its delicious cuisine, friendly people and of course, its pleasant environment, make this region one of the most coveted to visit among tourists from all over the world. However, Tenerife is more than only its tourist attractions; this region has an amazing history, holidays and legends that are well worthy to know.

The name ‚'Tenerife' means: 'snow covered mountain.' As the other seven islands, Tenerife is also considered as a Pluton son. It is estimated that the Canary Islands are 30 million years old, but at least 3 million years ago it is believed that there were three islands that through a great volcanic process byboth the central volcano and the great mountain range,formed what we know today as Tenerife.

Tenerife history Over time, Tenerife has been conquered by many cultures. Although, it is believed that the first ones visiting the island were the Phoenicians between 1.100 and 800 BC, the earliest known history of Tenerife begins with the Guanche people that are considered the first island inhabitants. The island was rediscovered many years later by the Spanish conqueror Alonso Fernández de Lugo.

Throughout its history, Tenerife has been the site of many battles. Tenerife’s history entered in a turbulent period with the start of Spanish civil war (1936-1939). In this period, after three years of conflict, the Spanish Royal family was dethroned by the general Francisco Franco who took over the island under a dictatorial regime but finally on November 22, 1975, the general Francisco Franco died and, shortly after, The King Juan Carlos I was reinstated as the new Spanish king.

Currently, Tenerife enjoys a good social and economic stability, making this beautiful island one of the best options to spend a pleasant time.
