Iglesia de Orotava

The Orotava in Tenerife has an excellent variety of well-maintained religious buildings from different eras and the “Iglesia de La Orotava” is one of them. This church is the best example of Baroque style throughout the Canary Islands. It’s located in La Orotava Ville in the Tenerife Island. The Iglesia de La Orotava is one of the most important churches of Tenerife, which is why locals call it “La Orotava’s Cathedral” or “La Orotava’s Basilica”.

Orotava - Tenerife In the 15th century, the church started as a shrine local people built in honor of the Immaculate Conception of the Virgin Maryin the northeast of the valley of La Orotava. In 1503, as the population grew, the shrine became too small tohold masses and other liturgical events, so it was turned into a parish under the charge of the Bishop Diego de Muros. In 1514, the parishwas declareda subsidiary of St. James Apostle, and became an official church two years later.

The Iglesia de Orotava was rebuilt and modified several times, but it still maintains its original design. It was declared a National Historic-Artistic Monument in 1948. The Iglesia de La Orotava displays many art works among paintings and sculptures. This church is open from Monday to Sunday and from 10:00 to 20:00 hours and it’s located in the Tomas Perez Street, tourists have free entrance.
