Iglesia de la Concepción, Santa Cruz

The “Iglesia-Parroquia Matriz de Nuestra Señora de La Concepción” is a Catholic church located in the Plaza de la Concepción in Santa Cruz de Tenerife. The Iglesia de la Concepción was among the first churches that the Spanish conquistadors erected after they turned Santa Cruz into their colony. The Iglesia de la Concepcion is the oldest church on the island, dating back to the early 16th century. The locals rebuilt it in the 17th century and much of its early architecture was replaced by later Gothic, Renaissance and Baroque additions.

This church houses two precious relics of Tenerife and of town history: the Cross of the Conquest, which the Spanish leader Fernandez de Lugo planted on the beach of Añazo right after he landed; and the Flags Of The Naval Squadron commanded by Horatio Nelson. The church displays several pieces of art datingback to the XVII and XVIII centuries. One of the most popular among these is the altarpiece carved in wood, with the statue of the Virgin.

Santa Cruz - Tenerife Another fine example of its artistic trend is the altarpiece of the main chapel, featuring a statue of the Virgin Mary by Fernando Estevez. The church most distinctive feature is its Moorish looking seven-tiered tower; inside, one can appreciate the fine Mudejar ceiling, and an 18thcentury cedar-wood pulpit. While visiting the chapels along the nave, the sculptures, paintings and gold-works, struck with their rich splendor. Among the masterpieces you must not miss, you can findthe Carata’s Chapel, a terrific altarpiece withinlaid wood dating back to the early 17thcentury; a painting by Juan de Miranda dedicated to the “Adoration of the Shepherds”; Our Lady of Sorrows and a San Joseby the sculptor Lujan Perez.

The Iglesia de la Concepción in Santa Cruz is an excellent start point of any kind of tour. This church has been declared a site of cultural interest. Locals organize the most beautiful festivity in honor of Our Lady of Conception on December; this date would be a good time to visit and learn more about this delightful church.
