Catedral de San Cristóbal de La Laguna

The Catedral de San Cristóbal de La Laguna, also called Santa Iglesia Catedral de Nuestra Señora de Los Remedios, is located in city centre of La Laguna. Local people consider this church an important part of their history and UNESCO declared this cathedral a World Heritage Site in 1999. The remains of Alonso Fernandez de Lugo, the conquerer and founder of La Laguna City are located here.

In 1511, Spanish conquerors and some local people built a small shrine in honor of the Virgin of Los Remedios. The shrine was later enlarged andin 1618, the Bishop Antonio Carrionero ordered to build its tower. In 1819, it became a cathedral, and as such, it was shaped according to the plansof the Cathedral of Pamplona. The current structure of the Catedral de San Cristobal dates to1904 and 1916.

San Cristobal - Tenerife This cathedral has a terrific marble pulpit carved by PasqualeBocciardo, and many valuable art works of Cristobal Hernadez de Quintana. The highlight inside the cathedral is the altarpiece of Nuestra Señora la Virgen de los Remedios, patron of La Laguna City. The altarpiece has a wonderful painting of the Virgin that dates from the 16th century. People can find many images of other saints and virgins such as La Virgen de la Candelaria, Juan Bautista, El Santisimo Cristo de los Remedios, and Virgen del Pilar.

The Catedral de San Cristobal de La Laguna is the icing on the cake of any city tour. The Cathedral opens from Monday to Sunday, although it sometimes closes due to restoration works. This delightful cathedralis a must for tourists visiting the city and an important part of the history of Tenerife.
